Underground mine museum

Pernik’s Underground Mine Museum is unique for the whole Balkan Peninsula. It’s situated in two preserved galleries of the first underground mine, known as ,,Starite rudnitsi’’ (1891). The two galleries have a combine length of about 630 meters. The Museum’s expositional chambers present the history of mining, spanning for more than a century – from manual produce and transportation the coal via wheelbarrows and stretchers, through horsepower, to the electric locomotives ,,Siemens’’ and the new mechanized complexes for coal exploitation.

At 50 meters bellow surface the visitors have contact not only to the minors’ work and the history of coal exploitation, but also to the unique history of a city, born out of the ,,black gold’’.

The Museum is one of the 100 National Tourist Sites of Bulgaria.
