The Museum

The Regional History Museum – Pernik was created in 1953 as a town’s museum. The first exposition was opened in 1957. Since 1959 it grows into a district museum, and in 1968, after administrational and structural changes, it began to be called District History Museum.

The Museum is generally historical, with the following departments: ,,Archeology’’, ,,Ethnography’’, ,,Bulgarian history – ХV-ХІХ century’’, ,,New and Newest Bulgarian History’’, and ,,Holdings’’. It’s accommodated with a restauration workshop and a scientific library. The History Museum exposition opened in 1973, and was renewed in 1978. The Museum holding is consisting of more than 60 000 movable and cultural properties. It has the following collections: prehistoric earthenware, urban household collection, Thracian Horsemen votive tablets, icons, numismatic collection, ethnographic fabrics, pottery from Busintzi village, and an armory.

Other than the acquiring, storage, and popularization of Pernik region’s cultural and historical heritage, the Museum realizes a number of educational programs, artistic, and children-oriented activities. The Medieval Fortress Pernik and Underground mine museum are under the Regional History Museum’s jurisdiction.
